My Story

I didn't learn to code in a classroom. I learned in the 6 to 8 months off a year I had as a merchant seaman.

38 years ago I sailed to Hawaii and never looked back. Yachts, cruise ships, tugboats, research vessels, container ships.

I also ran a window cleaning business. We counted windows on a paper form, and I'd lose track of which ones I'd already counted. I figured there had to be a better way. An app, maybe. Problem was, I had no idea how to build one.

So I tried to learn Objective-C. I couldn't do it. I'd read, get lost, close the laptop, and come back to it on the next trip. This was long before AI, so there was nobody to ask. I just kept at it.

Eventually it clicked, and I shipped Window Counter to the App Store. Window cleaners could count windows on their phone instead of a clipboard.

That's been the pattern ever since. Websites, web apps, more iOS apps, and now AI. I almost never know how to do something when I start. I figure it out.

I don't go to sea anymore. I'd rather be home with my wife and my dog. Now I do the figuring out for local businesses, because I've run one. I know what it's like to do great work and still have no time to chase leads.

Reviews

People would try our microgreens at the market, say "these are great," and walk off. We had no way to stay in touch. Mike built us a site so people can find us between markets, plus a free guide they can sign up for. Every signup gets an email with the guide and a coupon, and we get a heads-up. Now we have somewhere to send people.
